What is Bitcoin Pizza Day?

Bitcoin Pizza Day is a "Bitcoin holiday" celebrated every May 22nd to commemorate the first documented real-world transaction using Bitcoin. On this day in 2010, Bitcoin enthusiast Laszlo Hanyecz completed a transaction where he purchased two Papa John's pizzas for 10,000 Bitcoins.

During that time, Bitcoin was still unknown, and only a few enthusiasts appreciated its value. Hanyecz's transaction was a significant milestone in demonstrating how Bitcoin can be used as a form of money for real-world goods. This event also became one of the greatest missed opportunities had Hanyecz chosen to hold on to his 10,000 bitcoins instead of exchanging them for two boxes of pizza, they would have been worth exponentially more today. The approximate value of one bitcoin on May 22, 2023, is $26,849.27, so the value of 10,000 bitcoins would have been $268,492,700!

Bitcoin Pizza Day 2023

Almost twenty (20) Web 3 enterprises joined the event as exhibitors and sponsors, including Filipino-led Web 3 edutech company Bitskwela. Additionally, the total attendees for the event exceeded 600. The one-day event provided opportunities for both attendees and speakers to network and engage in discussions about the latest trends, challenges, and opportunities in the Web 3 space. There were also two panel discussions, a pizza-eating contest, and free pizza!  

The event was spearheaded by Arravind Prabu, Co-Founder and CEO of CryptoBilis, and Jason Chew, Guild Lead of Polygon Guild Malaysia and Founder of KopiDAO. Other speakers in attendance included Jiro Reyes, Co-founder and CEO of Bitskwela; RC Pajaro, Co-Founder of NFT Philippines; Nicholas Chong, Manager at Securities Commission Malaysia; Jessica Chuah, Malaysia Country Manager at Chainalysis; and more.

Event Highlights

1. Panel Discussions

There were two panel discussions (Panel A and Panel B), where panelists covered a wide range of topics, including views on the current state of the market, what to do in a bear market, crypto regulation, legitimacy of cryptocurrency projects, and the future of Web 3 in Malaysia, among many others.

2. Pizza-Eating Contest

A pizza-eating contest was held on stage right after the speaker talks and panel discussions. There were 5 pizza boxes displayed on stage and 5 teams, with 5 members maximum for each team, who were chosen to compete. This event highlight was not to be missed as it paid tribute to what the event was all about‚ÄîBitcoin and pizza. 

3. Exclusive Merchandise and Free Pizza

The event featured a variety of exhibits offering exclusive merchandise and fun activities for the attendees to interact with. Participants delighted in free drinks and free pizza as they listened to the speakers and panelists throughout the event.
